Your child has expressed an interest in joining the school orchestra this year. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop a lifelong love of music and to experience playing music in a large group. However, it does require commitment and perseverance. I expect orchestra members to attend every practice, including any extra ones. This year the orchestra is available for children in Years 4-6, and only in exceptional circumstances to younger children.
Your child will be placed in a tuition group with other children playing similar instruments and will be expected to arrive ready to start playing by 8.00am every Friday morning. I am hoping to start 8am orchestra practices on 23 March (Week 8) and 1pm lunchtime practices in Term 2.
The orchestra donation for the year is $10. Please follow the payment instructions on the blue letter your child brought home last week. This covers the ongoing costs of instrument repairs and replacements and tutor thank you gifts at the end of the year. There is no charge for children of tutors. (If you are available to tutor an orchestra group please let me know.) Your child will also need a named clear file to keep their music in – it is helpful to get a folder that will stand open by itself on a music stand. This year, all communication for the orchestra will be via email. If your child wishes to join the orchestra please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org explaining what instrument your child wishes to play, how much experience they have had and how you are paying. The instrument choices are below:
- Drums* All drummers must play another instrument too as drummers will be rotated.
*These instruments are provided by the school.
Please note: in order to play the following instruments in the school orchestra, your child needs to already know how to play them or be having lessons: violin, cello, guitar, ukulele, flute, clarinet, keyboard or drums.
Please let me know asap - by Fri 2 March so that I can get tutors and music organised.
